Editor's Note
Got Grammy?
Contributed by Bill Evans
There is a joke about sound guys that, while it does not shine the best possible light on us, causes every sound person I have ever told it to to either laugh or nod because it rings so true.

Q: How many sound guys does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: 10. One to do it and nine to stand around telling each other how much better they could have done it.

We put the question of volume control strategies to the ProAudioSpace tribe (still not a member? Go to www.ProAudioSpace.com - now!) and obviously hit a chord. We got almost 100 responses - some of them very detailed - outlining individual approaches and strategies. Here are just a few excerpts from those responses. You can find them all in the Forums section of PAS.
The A-Team at the Grammy Awards
Contributed by Bill Evans
It was a big night of big performances (like Green Day, pictured here, doing a number with the cast of their Broadway-bound American Idiot musical) and an even bigger night for the people behind the scenes. You know, the people who make it all look easy. FOH Editor Bill Evans was there for the rehearsals with the "A Team."

Ear Candy for Eye Candy: Victoria's Secret Fashion Show
Contributed by David John Farinella
Not for nothing, but it's slightly doubtful that there were any eyes scanning the top of television sets around the country during this year's broadcast of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show looking for speaker boxes. Could be wagered, in fact, that all eyes were firmly placed on hostess Heidi Klum and models Marisa Miller, Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes and Miranda Kerr.

dbx DriveRack PA+
Contributed by Jamie Rio
It has been more than 10 years since dbx introduced the first DriveRack. To say that the DriveRack has been a success is a huge understatement. This product line has changed how many sound technicians set up and manage their sound systems. Not to mention how so many installations are designed with DriveRacks as part of the system.

Stage Monitor Selection and Placement
Contributed by Brian Klijanowicz
Have you ever heard the saying, "Ask 100 engineers that question, and you'll get 100 different answers?" That can be said about how stage monitors are selected and placed. Whether it be wide dispersion, narrow dispersion, horns in, horns out, wedge angles, horn throat sizes - the list goes on and on. There are hundreds of products out there and just as many ways to achieve the same goal.
On the Digital Edge
I Thought I Saw a Mixer In My Laptop
Contributed by Steve LaCerra
We've been seeing tons of hardware audio consoles with sophisticated software. Now here's a twist from RML Labs: a software console that has no hardware. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but let's take a look at a cutting edge audio application that is not tied to a specific piece of hardware. The program is called SAC or Software Audio Console, and it has some pretty impressive features.

Every month, I try to write something that will be useful to all of you out there, whether you volunteer your services at your house of worship or you mix and install worship sound systems as a part or all of your income. This month I would also like to include those of you who work with live sound, but not necessarily in the house of worship sound arena.

As I am writing this article, it is that time of year once again. As you are reading this article, that time of year is already on the wane. But despite my inability to plan ahead so that you might be able to read a timely piece of poignant journalism, let me be one of the last to say "Happy New Year."

Electro-Voice adds to the ZX loudspeaker family with the ZXA1 - the self-powered version of the ZX1 compact two-way loudspeaker. The ZXA1 is powered by an 800 watt amplifier module derived from EV's Tour Grade series and a lightweight, molded enclosure that houses an 8" woofer and 1" titanium compression driver.
Offering an extended high frequency response, fast impulse response, short diaphragm settling time and high rejection of sounds from the rear of the microphone the new SR40 can be used for drum overheads to miking a guitar cabinet or as a solo microphone.
